Make a list and try to stick to it

Have you ever gone on shopping without a list? You most probably would have bought some things you did not need or forgot to buy some things you need. It happens to all of us whether it is shopping for groceries, clothes, or household items.

This is number one on my shopping tips because having a list reduces the tendency for impulse buying and saves you time. As your groceries get finished at home or you notice a need for a particular set of clothes or items, write them down and review them as your shopping day gets closer. A pen and paper will do but you can go digital as there are many apps out there that can be of help to you.

Give yourself room for some budget-breaking surprises as you may find some items that are on super sale, or on clearance which you will need but are not on your list.  You know that you can never really predict when it comes to shopping but try not to get into the habit of always breaking off your list for a sudden buy.

Time your shopping

Knowing when to shop and timing is key to getting good deals for groceries and shopping. Some groceries retailers start new promotions on Wednesdays (though some others may have different days because their shelves are restocked during midweek and they mark down items that didn’t sell from the previous week. This can help you save on milk, vegetables, fruits, cookies, eggs, cereal, and a whole bunch. Also, If you are in early, you can quickly grab the clearance. So, make sure you know when your preferred store has its mark down or rotation days.

Clothes, shoes, apparels and other household items need timing too. You can sign up for the newsletters of major retailers to get emails on when their promotions are available. Similarly, grocery store websites show sales circulars weekly to help you identify what is on sale so you can time your groceries shopping.

Furthermore, I like to follow a cliché – In the summer, I buy what I need in the winter and during the winter, I buy what I need in the summer. A friend of mine followed this and got a grill for 25% of the price at Home Depot during the winter. You heard me right! No one is looking to buy a grill when the weather outside is –10°C because you can’t use a grill under that cold weather, so Home Depot wanted to get it out of their stand.

Buy Bulk sensibly

I know this may sound crazy but buying bulk can help you save money. Have you ever bought an item? – lets says a can of milk for 3.99 dollars. Only to come the next week, that can of milk is 4.99 dollars and the same goes for all the other items. Trust me those little dollars add up everywhere to drain your wallet and purse.

This is where bulk buying comes in to help especially when you are doing it sensibly. Comparing prices per unit or ounce and getting things in bulk during sales and promotions helps a lot but do be tempted to buy extravagantly more than you can ever need. Stock up based on your family size periodically especially when you are expecting visitors, during festive periods and trim down on bulk buying when you are going on a long vacation.

Make sure you check expiration dates when buying bulk and have some space in your refrigerator and pantry. You don’t want to get home with all the bulk, and only then find out the items will soon expire or there is no space to store them.

Some items never expire such as honey, sugar, salt, dried beans and a host of others. Above all, when you know the sales cycle of your preferred grocery store, bulk buying will surely put some money back in your pocket.

In conclusion, those are three tips that can lower your shopping bills. I have used these tips for years now and they have helped me to reduce what the cashier bills me.
